5 out of 5 stars Fab TV   June 17, 2010

Really good all round TV. Excellent colour and sound also well worth paying the extra for motionflow.

1 out of 5 stars Really disappointing   June 7, 2010

i have just had to return the Sony37W5500. i have replaced it with the Sony KDL40503u. The picture quality on the ex503 is noticeably better. the w5500 was really dull and blacks were really poor. No matter what changes to the settings I tried it just didn't seem to produce a good or even reasonable picture with good colours. input signals from a BT vision box were ruined with a crackly white line at the bottom of the set when connected with a HDMI cable. This ex503 has an excellent picture quality on Freeview HD - the SD signal is slightly fuzzy at times but i guess that's due to the signal not the tv. All round you'd think that there were completely unrelated tv's with different technology - the ex503 is much superior.

This really is a great TV, perfect picture, size, and style; it is a welcome addition to my living room. Connect up a blue-ray player and sky+HD box and you'll be watching telly like never before. Amazon service and price is highly competitive, you'll be hard pressed beating the asking price and delivery was only two days after placing the order. I have absolutely no complaints about my purchase and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a quality product.

4 out of 5 stars Good quality Sony TV   April 19, 2010

This 37" Sony set offers good quality and a decent feature set at a good price. It's finished in a piano black style, so it's nice and shiny (if a bit of a swine to keep dust free) and the screen also swivels side to side a little bit, which is quite nice for changing viewing angle if you need to.

There are plenty of inputs, with a whopping four HDMI ports built in as well. One slight drawback here is the set doesn't appear to support HDMI video only input (say, from a PC) with a separate sound source. It will only work with video and audio through the same HDMI interface. The manual gives the impression that it should be possible, but I haven't managed to get it work.

The picture quality is good, with pretty minimal fiddling with controls. By default it's bright and colourful, although blacks are not as deep as I would like and there is a little ghosting at times, although this mainly seems to afflict standard rather than high definition. All HD content I have put through the TV looks stunning, and the 100hz MotionFlow can add to the picture dramatically, but it varies by source. Blu Ray playback, for example, can get pretty jerky when using full MotionFlow, if you scale it back a bit it's more effective.

The viewing angle is OK, from the front it's obviously spot on, but viewing even slightly from the side or above washes the picture out a bit. It's not as strong as some other TVs I have watched in this area, but 90%+ of the time I'm right in front of it so it's not a big issue.

I'm using the built-in speakers for sound and with some considerable tweaking of the settings it sounds fine. The surround sound effects aren't too good and are better left switched off. Overall I'm happy with it until I one day plump for a home cinema system.

The TV was up and running with all of my various devices connected within a matter of minutes after unpacking. The menu system used is simple enough and the remote is good. It has a Bravia Sync capability so will also control Sony DVD players and so on. Although the TV supports on-screen widgets for various internet-enabled tools they are pretty much a waste of time. If you desperately want to use them, they are easy enough to set-up but not really worthwhile.

Overall I think this is a good value TV with plenty of features and a good specification. Sometimes the picture is not quite all I would hope for and it's not the leap forward in viewing that perhaps I was hoping for, but well worth considering (especially if Sony are still doing their free 3 year guarantee, worth a good few quid on its own).
